Business Facilities Annual Top Utilities
The January and February 2024 edition of Business Facilities has released its annual list of Top Utilities, taking a magnifying glass to the country's powerhouses that keep our lights on and business's growing. Our organization is thrilled to be recognized for a second year, highlighting our commitment to growing the communities we serve and the state we call home.
As corporate citizens, Georgia Power is not only in the business of providing power but also powering businesses - and we've been doing so for almost a century. Our accomplished business recruitment and regional economic development teams work in collaboration with engineers, research analysts, and marketing professionals, providing state-wide support to businesses of any size and at any stage of growth.
"Economic Development is a team sport – and great partnerships and collaboration are a huge part of our success. We work hand in hand with state and local economic development partners and site selection consultants across the globe to help keep Georgia the best state for business,” shared Walt Farrell, Vice President of Economic Development, Georgia Power.
What makes a utility a top partner in economic development?
Business Facilities Magazine asked our team which initiatives stood out in economic development. While it's hard to point to only one, there were significant projects that helped the state's businesses related to infrastructure, business recruitment, and strengthening Georgia’s talent pipeline.
- Infrastructure - Continuing our commitment to reliable and clean energy, Georgia Power made headlines last year when we launched Plant Vogtle Unit 3, the first new nuclear unit built in the U.S. in over three decades. A significant step forward in clean energy, these new units promise reliable, emission-free energy for the long haul.
- Business Recruitment - One of the shining successes of statewide partnership is the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America announcement in coastal Georgia. In 2023, working closely with industry and community leaders, Georgia Power Economic Development responded with resources and property tools to assist in the recruitment of suppliers for the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America. Through this initiative, Georgia Power supported the successful location of 16 Tier 1 and 2 automotive suppliers, creating 6,700 jobs and making a substantial capital investment in the area.
- Talent Pipeline - Understanding that electric transportation goes beyond cars and batteries, Georgia Power is committed to strengthening the pipeline for all electric mobility. In April, Georgia Power announced a $5 million gift to the University of Georgia College of Engineering toward their Electric Mobility Initiative. Georgia Power’s support funds an array of programs and opportunities related to electric transportation, from cars and bicycles to aircrafts, and their accompanying technologies and infrastructure. The gift also includes funding for scholarships, research, and efforts for partnership with academic institutions across the state.
These concerted efforts and partner relationships have helped Georgia maintain its status as a leading state for business and Georgia Power a top utility partner in economic development.
