Discovering the Engine of Growth
In economic development, we talk a lot about workforce development in our state and communities. Strengthening our workforce and developing a strong talent pipeline for industry is essential to Georgia, but it’s also important to introduce professionals to the economic development industry and its role in locating businesses and growing communities.
This past year our team was fortunate to work with Teresa Huckabee. Teresa joined our team on a stop along her professional journey at Georgia Power - seeking to learn more about economic development and expand her knowledge as a Business Recruitment Associate.
During her time, Teresa made valuable contributions to our mission of generating opportunities and powering prosperity through economic development. Continue reading to learn what Teresa had to say about her work in economic development this year.
My Journey through Economic Development at Georgia Power
I stepped through the doors of the Georgia Experience Center in April with a profound curiosity about the mechanics of regional growth and the direct impact that businesses have on community prosperity. The field always intrigued me as a potent force capable of sculpting landscapes, lives, and legacies. It was an opportunity to delve into the heart of progress, and with Georgia Power's long-standing reputation for fostering development, I knew it was the perfect place for my developmental journey.
Defining Economic Development
As parents, we often find ourselves trying to describe our jobs to our little ones in the simplest of terms. My daughter’s innocent curiosity provided me with a moment to reflect on what economic development truly means to me, a story I now fondly recount.
On our drive to a family retreat at Tybee Island, an opportunity for a real-world illustration of my work presented itself. Gesturing towards the vast Hyundai megasite we were cruising by, I invited my daughter to take a closer look. "Do you see that massive complex out there?" I said. "That's a big part of my day-to-day at work."
Her expression, a blend of interest and confusion, prompted a deeper explanation. "You know, the team I'm privileged to be a part of played a significant role in bringing that facility to our home state of Georgia. Its presence means that many people will be able to find good employment."
Astutely, she distilled my rambling down to its essence: "So, your job is to make more jobs?" Smiling at her succinct summary, I agreed, "Well, yes, darling, that's exactly right."
Her simple, heartfelt response — "That's really nice." — encapsulated the true impact of economic development work. Beyond the spreadsheets, strategies, and negotiations, at the core of our mission, we strive for a singular noble purpose: to uplift communities by fostering job creation. Her words underscore the gratifying reality of my profession — it's not just about jobs but about the betterment of lives and livelihoods.
It's a complex dance between public entities, private businesses, and non-profits, altogether working towards a symphony of sustainable growth. It's about creating opportunities where they are needed the most and ensuring that the benefits ripple through every layer of society.
And yes, indeed, it is very nice.

Key Insights from My Rotation
Throughout my time with Georgia Power Economic Development, I was exposed to various facets of the industry each leaving an indelible mark on my understanding of the field. One vital takeaway is the value of partnerships. The collaborative approach between various stakeholders is not just beneficial, it's imperative. Building strong ties with local governments, chambers of commerce, and educational institutions creates a synergy that propels projects and initiatives to fruition much more efficiently.
Another profound lesson is the unwavering support for entrepreneurs. Startups and small businesses are often heralded as the backbone of our economy and rightly so. Promoting an environment where entrepreneurs can thrive, experiment, and innovate is essential for sustained economic vitality. Over the past two years, the organization has launched programs like CREATE (Cultivating Rural Entrepreneurs and Transforming Economies) and GrowGeorgia.com. Georgia Power champions this entrepreneurial spirit, which helps maintain the state's competitive edge.
Going Forth with New Convictions
Armed with these experiences, I'm keen to carry the ethos of collaboration and empowerment into my next role. Fostering these partnerships and supporting innovation will be principles I'll passionately advocate for and leverage in my future endeavors.
The Immeasurable Value of Relationships
But beyond any single lesson or skill, the relationships I've fostered during my rotation have had the most profound impact on my personal and professional growth. The wisdom, generosity, and enthusiasm of the people in Georgia Power's Economic Development team and our partners have been a wellspring of inspiration. It's the collective drive, ambition, and spirit of these individuals that truly propel Georgia to its accolade as the prime state for doing business.
Each interaction and project have been an opportunity to weave another thread into the fabric of my professional network — a network that supports, advises, and inspires. The kindness and willingness to mentor are among the priceless treasures I've accumulated, and it’s all thanks to the ethos that underscores Georgia Power's approach to development: that progress is always a collective endeavor.
Moving forward, the insights gained, connections made, and lessons learned will undoubtedly influence my contributions not just within Georgia Power but to the broader community that we serve. As I exit, there is a clear path ahead, illuminated by the knowledge that together, we fuel not just the economy, but the very lives that keep it turning.
