Economic Development Week 2022

“Every year we look forward to celebrating Economic Development Week – a week dedicated to sharing how economic development teams help their communities to grow. This year marks 95 years of Georgia Power supporting community and economic development in the state of Georgia. Working hand-in-hand with our partners we strive to provide innovative resources to our communities and businesses, as well as working in classrooms to help prepare Georgia’s future workforce. We’re proud to know our daily efforts lead to a more prosperous state for the people who call Georgia home.”

-- Walt Farrell, Vice President of Economic Development, Georgia Power

Economic Development Week was created by the International Economic Development Council in 2016 to increase awareness of programs that create jobs, investment, and improve the quality of life in communities everywhere.

For almost a century, Georgia Power has been helping communities across the state grow and prosper. In fact, since 2015, we have helped to bring or retain more than 120,000 jobs to the state and supported the addition of nearly $33 billion in capital investment.

Grow Georgia

In Georgia, 38,000+ businesses are minority-owned. Across the state, there are resources focused on their growth - minority-focused networking, supplier-diversity programs, and more. Georgia Power's Community and Economic Development team saw a chance to help bring those businesses and resources together. We recently launched Grow Georgia - a platform to accelerate the growth of minority-owned and small businesses. Grow Georgia saves businesses valuable time by promoting these resources in one place. We look forward to helping connect, grow, and celebrate this essential part of our economy.

The CREATE Program

In Georgia, over 2.3 million people call rural communities home. Small but mighty, these towns are packed with talented and passionate leaders working to ensure that their cities have a prominent place in Georgia's future. To amplify their efforts, Georgia Power, Main Street America, and the University of Georgia Office of Public Service and Outreach have partnered on a two-year program, CREATE - Cultivating Rural Entrepreneurs And Transforming Economies. The first CREATE cohort will kick off on May 10, 2022, with leaders participating from Baldwin, Bleckley, Hart, Pickens, Polk, and Toombs County.

Industry Spotlight

MRO

Something we hear often from consultants, prospects, and partners is how well Team Georgia works together. Our state, local, and utility partners work hard to secure opportunities for all Georgians and their communities. We captured an example of these great partnerships with a recent story on the MRO (maintenance, repair, overhaul) industry in Georgia. The Central region is known for its rich aerospace background, and a skilled workforce to support the industry. You can read the full story, and watch the video featuring our Macon-Bibb partners here.
