Top Utility in Economic Development

Since 1999, Georgia Power has been recognized by Site Selection magazine as a winning partner

A Top Utility in Economic Development Since 1998

We’re honored to be recognized by Site Selection Magazine as a Top Utility in economic development for the 26th consecutive year.

“The elite Top Utilities we named this year earned the honor due to their economic development teams’ outstanding efforts connecting to business and community leaders as well as to power sources,” says Bruns of the rankings that Site Selection has published since 1999. “What they hear and what we hear from those leaders is that power provision is top of mind.”

Whether it was helping grow Georgia’s top industries, providing energy solutions, creating new research and engineering tools, or promoting Georgia – we take our role seriously as a trusted partner in economic development for the state we call home.

Last year was another extraordinary one, and we are proud to have contributed to historical wins for the state and local communities, as well as set records for Georgia Power, including:

Supporting Georgia’s Top Industries

2023 was the second-best year on record for Georgia Power Economic Development, behind previous year’s historic state wins of megaprojects Rivian and the Hyundai EV Metaplant.

Hyundai's suppliers contributed significantly to our success in 2023. We also experienced soaring demand for data center investment related to generative AI, cloud adoption, and growing technical advancements.

Locations in the top industries of food processing, life sciences, e-commerce, and diversified manufacturing added to last year’s significant capital investment and job creation numbers. We also saw the reemergence of the office market which had been quiet since the pandemic.

We are proud to have contributed to these wins for the state and local communities. This success was recognized by premier sources of news and trends.

  • Georgia was named #1 Best State for Business for Site Selection by Area Development magazine for the 10th year in a row in 2023. Georgia placed in the top ten of 14 categories and ranked No. 1 in seven according to Area Development.
  • In February 2024, Business Facilities magazine also named Georgia Power as a Top Utility in Economic Development.
  • CNBC Ranked Georgia the No. 1 State for Business Infrastructure in July 2024.

Clean energy for a growing Georgia

On top of our work in the state and communities, our company delivered a new, clean energy nuclear asset when it was needed most. Some highlights from last year include:

  • Plant Vogtle Units 3 and 4 entered commercial operation. With the addition of Unit 4, Georgia is now the home to the largest generator of emissions-free energy in the United States.
  • Georgia Power filed an updated Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) in 2023, between three-year cycles. The reason for this IRP was the extraordinary demand that large manufacturing projects and data centers were creating.
  • Energy is now being delivered to Georgia Power customers from more than 3,400 MW of renewable resources, with plans to more than double this amount by adding an additional 6,000 MW by 2035.

In Summary

2023 proved to be a year focused on continued momentum to meet the site, energy, and workforce needs of these megaprojects. Our economic development team achieved an exceptional level of collaboration, internally and externally, to ensure Georgia remains the top state for business.

Thank you to the dedicated talent at Georgia Power, statewide partners, and local communities for keeping Georgia at the top. We are humbled to be recognized as a winning partner in Georgia's continued success.

Here's to another 26 years!
