Georgia Power's Workforce Development team continued their work supporting FIRST Robotics last week by hosting FIRST day for high school students at company headquarters. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded to inspire youth’s interest and participation in science and technology. FIRST Day not only gave the the students a chance to demonstrate their skills, employees also had the opportunity to learn more about the program and view robot demonstrations. They were also able to tour the Georgia Power Machine Shop, a mobile trailer that is set up to assist teams with robot repairs during competitions.
With the current and future demand for employees with science and technology backgrounds in our industry, our team's objective is to increase the number of students interested in these fields who might want to pursue a career path with our company or the state. Georgia Power recognizes the value of productive partnerships with non-profit organizations like FIRST Robotics that encourage student participation in mentor-based programs that inspire young people to become science and technology leaders.
FIRST Day was an opportunity to allow employees to interact with the FIRST teams and learn more about opportunities to volunteer their time to the students participating in FIRST Robotics. It also allowed students to share their stories of growth and success with interested and encouraging adults in a real-world professional environment.
