“Living in Savannah gives my family an opportunity to be a part of the community in a way we weren’t able to when we lived in Washington, D.C. We’re a part of civic life here and are helping to build the tech community and entrepreneurs with TechSAV – a group of innovators, designers and technologists who are passionate about building better products and a better community. We choose to live here, when we could live anywhere, because of the quality of life and the qualities of our neighbors.”
There is no shortage of uniquely memorable experiences in Savannah. Founded in 1733 by General James Oglethorpe, Savannah is home to the largest National Historic Landmark District in the country, attracting more than 14 million visitors a year.
Tybee Island
One of Savannah’s most beloved attractions is Tybee Island, a laid-back beach town just 20 minutes from downtown Savannah. Tybee boasts five miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches, a public pier, lighthouse and marine science center, plus lots of casual restaurants and shops.
A Culinary Paradise
Forbes magazine said it all, “Savannah’s Culinary Paradise is yours for the taking.” From rooftop patios like Local 11ten, to fine dining at its best with The Grey, Fat Radish or Husk, you will find something to delight your taste buds and an experience that’s equally as special. Of course, Savannah also offers bites and libations of all varieties for you to enjoy any time of day including freshly brewed coffee from purveyors, like Savannah Coffee Roasters or Coffee Fox, and lunch time goodness from James Beard nominee Bryan Furam’s B Cracklin’ BBQ.
Then of course, you can’t live this close to the coast and not indulge in seafood! With most restaurants masterfully cooking a fresh catch that came off the docks that morning, you’re sure to declare seafood as a specialty of the city. A Regional Hub for Advanced Healthcare
In Savannah there are two major medical centers: St. Joseph’s/Candler and Memorial Health University Medical Center – as well as two state-of-the-art cancer centers: Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion and the Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute.
Specifically, Memorial Health University Medical Center is the largest healthcare provider in southeast Georgia. Memorial serves 35 counties in southeast Georgia and southern South Carolina through the dedication of its 4,775 team members and 675 physicians. With a focus on education and training, each year Memorial graduates more than 60 physicians through Mercer University School of Medicine while also offering six residency programs that train new physicians from around the world. Perhaps most impressive, however, is that Memorial houses a level-one trauma center, a children’s hospital, a level-three neonatal intensive care nursery and a cancer research laboratory.
The region’s other major medical center is St. Joseph’s/Candler, which is the only healthcare provider in the region to achieve both network accreditation status and MAGNET status for nursing excellence. St. Joseph’s/Candler is powered by 3,400 team members and 588 physicians. An affiliate of Emory University Healthcare, St. Joseph’s/Candler achieved the rare honor of network accreditation status and also received its accreditation by the Joint Commission.
In the Savannah region, healthcare and social assistance ranks as the third-highest industry of employment and continues to show consistently strong growth trends. When paired with the area’s innovative technology development, which is also on the rise in the region, it’s safe to say that this sector of the area’s economy is in good health.
